Paonias myops inhabits southern Canada, most of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found in a variety of deciduous and mixed forests and woodlands. The wingspan is 45-75 mm. The upperside of wings is variable in colour and pattern (gray, brown, or ochrous; often with wavy bands). The forewing is double-indented at the tip, but not scalloped; the hindwing has a yellow patch with a black-rimmed bluish eyespot. The caterpillar feeds on various Rosaceae (Amelanchier and Prunus spp.), basswood (Tilia americana), etc. Adults do not feed. P. myops flies from April to October.
